Godly Play |
|
Children of all ages are welcome to join our Church School
classes on Sunday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15. We are using a curriculum and style of
teaching called Godly Play. It is an approach to working with children to support,
challenge, nourish, and help guide them on their spiritual journeys. A sensorimotor style
of storytelling is used as a primary means for encountering God. In this way the children
dont just learn about God but actually experience God. It is an open approach that
enables the child to respond to the stories of God through continued work with story
figures and art materials. The important stories of our faith our given to the children
helping them develop a religious language to talk about their own faith. It enables
children to bring their life experiences together with biblical stories to assist in
coping with such existential issues as loneliness, death, freedom, need for meaning in
life (common to both children and adults!). The class begins each week with a story followed by a response time. Children are free to choose their own means of responding to the story but are also given suggestions if needed from the staff. The session ends with the story being read from the Bible and a community prayer. Linda Blades, who leads the class, owns and operates a Montessori school. The class is open to children ages 3 years to 12 years. The curriculum is supportive both of those children who are able to attend weekly and those who can only attend sporadically.
